At Write On! we want to enable students who may want or need any extra help with English at Key stage 3 or 4, or for anyone who may be home-schooling and feel that they would like a close-to-the-text analysis. Many of these sessions have been developed directly out of lessons taught and tutoring sessions organised, and provide the close ‘one to one’ feel that so many cannot necessarily afford. Key stage 3 works almost as a basic, relaxed training ground for all the skills students will eventually use in their GCSE examinations. The texts they study therefore, tend to have a little bit of everything, it includes reading a text and looking in details at what the writer has done with it and why. It also includes looking at what the students can do to make their own writing more interesting and more effective. Each session has a pre-recorded session, and a pdf of slides that they can follow as they go. They get told when to move on, and how long each task should last, approximately. As the session begins, there are multiple opportunities to stop and carry out a clearly presented task. Often as the student presses play, they are often told verbally, or shown, how that task might look. Most sessions have a slightly larger task that would show the learning and understanding that has gone on. It is often a piece of analysis, or some writing exercise. Every exercise has an exemplar that the less confident can use as a model. Once finished, there is a colour coded exemplar, showing how a piece of work might be marked, or how the paragraph should have been structured, or the skills that should have been included. Students are given the chance to look, colour code their own, and then make improvements to whatever they feel is lacking or missing.
